In view of the Corona crisis and flood situation in the country, the Election Commission has decided to postpone the by-elections in eight seats for the time being. The Commission’s committee will discuss the next dates in the meeting on Friday.
A senior Election Commission official said, “The situation is very serious in some areas due to the Corona epidemic and floods, due to which a decision has been taken to postpone the by-elections.” As per the rules to fill the vacant seat in six months, the by-elections were to be held in the Lokmiki Nagar seat of Bihar and two seats in UP and Tamil Nadu and one seat each in Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Kerala till September 7.
When we review the situation, it is difficult to hold elections in this situation. In such a situation, a letter has been given to the Law Ministry to postpone the by-elections in these seats. He informed that now the dates of the by-elections in these seats will be discussed in the meeting on Friday.
The Election Commission said that a total of 56 assembly and one Lok Sabha seats are to be held by-elections. But under the six-month rule, the by-election deadline for eight seats was ending on September 7. Therefore, a decision has been taken regarding these eight seats. The by-elections in the remaining 49 seats can also be held after September 7. Therefore, a decision on these will be taken keeping in mind the situation ahead.
