Instagram Removes IGTV Icon from Home Screen

Instagram removed the IGTV icon from the app’s home screen, because it was not used by many users. In June 2018 the company launched the standalone IGTV app. The decision to remove the IGTV button from the main application is seen as an indication of the feature’s poor reception.

TechCrunch was told by the company that most people find IGTV content through previews in Feed, the IGTV channel in Explore, profiles of creators, and the standalone IGTV app. Hence the separate icon on the home screen’s top right corner has been dropped.

“One thing still missing is an open way for Instagram creators to earn money directly from their IGTV videos. Users can’t get an ad revenue share like with YouTube or Facebook Watch,” wrote TechCrunch.

“When the lack of monetization is combined with less than stellar view counts compared to YouTube and TikTok, it’s understandable why some creators might be hesitant to dedicate time to IGTV,” it added.

Instagram also added a new feature to enable more users to easily post long-form videos, which allows users to post IGTV videos directly from the IGTV feed video uploader of the main app.

Separately, earlier this month, the Facebook-owned company announced three new sharing options. It was for Boomerang Stories: SlowMo, Echo, and Duo, along with a few new features to trim their scope. The new filters are available in the Instagram Stories app, found in the Boomerang writer.
